2026 Curating Museums in Transformation: Student Curator Selection Competition — Micro Exhibition Statement
In an era of rapid globalization and technological advancement, social structures, values, and cultural landscapes are undergoing profound transformation. Museums are no longer merely preservers of the past; they have become dynamic bridges for cultural flow, actively engaging in social dialogue and responding to contemporary needs. The theme of International Museum Day (IMD) 2026, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” underscores the role of museums in fostering cultural exchange, breaking down barriers, and building consensus within an increasingly diverse global context.
In response to this global initiative, the Chung Tai World Museum presents the Curating Museums in Transformation: Student Curator Selection Competition. Through the perspectives of student curators, the program offers reflections on cultural change, reinterprets the cultural identity of museums, and explores diverse possibilities for the future of museum practice.
This year’s projects reflect a wide range of themes. Some focus on animals in religious belief, exploring their symbolic meanings and significance to convey the Buddhist concept of equality. Others center on figures such as Master Xuanzang or Bodhisattva imagery, examining the evolution of multicultural aesthetics and the deeper significance of cultural exchange. Additionally, some projects take “curation” itself as their subject, offering critical reflections on contemporary exhibition concepts and practices.
Through this exhibition platform, the Chung Tai World Museum not only inspires younger generations to engage with cultural heritage and innovation, but also brings forward diverse and emerging perspectives. These youthful curatorial voices reveal the pluralistic values embodied by contemporary museums, fostering dialogue and connection across cultures and generations. In a world both cohesive and divided, museums continue to serve as vital spaces for cultural preservation and inclusive engagement.
